Have You Ever Wondered Why God Feels Silent?

Do you ever find that when you pray and read your Bible, hoping to hear God’s voice, you often end up feeling like you’re talking into the air?

Maybe you’ve been a Christian for years and have done all the things Christians are expected to do. Maybe people look at you and think you are a model of what a Christian should look like, yet you still find yourself wondering, “Other people seem to hear from God. Why don’t I?” I have wrestled with that question too. What if we need to take another look at how God has already been speaking?

Have You Had Questions Like These?

Do your prayers ever feel like you are doing all the talking? Maybe you finish reading your Bible and realize you are not even sure what you just read. Then you hear other Christians talk about the ways God has led them, and you wonder why your own experience does not seem to match theirs.

Maybe you have tried a new Bible plan, changed the way you pray, or started journaling because you hoped it would help you feel more connected to God. And for a while, maybe it did. But then life got busy, the routine slipped away, and you found yourself right back where you started, wondering why this seems to come so much easier for other people.

If you have been there, I think that is worth talking about. You do not have to pretend those questions are not there. In fact, sometimes those questions can help us begin to understand why connecting with God has felt harder than we expected.

What Are We Expecting God to Sound Like?

I think one of the things that can make hearing God difficult is that we already have an idea of what we think it should look like. We expect God to speak in a certain way, answer a certain prayer, or give us the kind of direction we were hoping for. And when He does not do it the way we expected, it can be easy to assume that He is not speaking at all.

Sometimes we even begin to wonder if He cares, or if He simply does not want to lead us. But what if the problem is not that God has been silent? What if we have been looking for Him to speak one way while He has been speaking to us in another?

You May Want to Try This

The next time prayer feels silent, you may want to ask, “What am I expecting God’s answer to sound like?” Then give yourself a little room to notice whether Scripture, a good friend, a circumstance, or even a heavy conviction that is consistent with God’s character keeps bringing the same thought to your mind.

A Teaching You Can Watch

Maybe God Wasn’t Silent After All

Have you ever looked back at a situation and realized that God may have been working long before you recognized it? In this teaching, I share why we can miss God’s voice when His answer does not come in the way we expected.

The Seminar

What Will We Look At In The When God Feels Silent Seminar?

These six presentations build on one another. We begin with who God is and who we are in Jesus, then look at what may be keeping us from recognizing how He is already speaking through Scripture, prayer, people, and ordinary life.

Session 1: When You Forget Who You Are

We begin with God’s character and what Jesus has done for us, because hearing God starts with knowing that our place with Him does not rest on our performance.

Session 2: Blockers From Hearing God

We consider the beliefs, shame, noise, and expectations that may make it difficult to recognize how God is speaking.

Session 3: Reading the Bible the Way God Intended

We look at the purpose of Scripture, how context helps us understand a passage, and what it means to listen as we read.

Session 4: How God Speaks to Us

We explore ways God may speak through Scripture, people, nature, and ordinary life, while testing everything against His Word.

Session 5: The Voice You Were Created to Hear

We talk about the voices and noise that can fill our prayers, and how we can make room to listen without trying to force an experience.

Session 6: When God Speaks Along the Way

We consider how God may guide us through work, errands, decisions, and conversations as we learn to respond with discernment.

Stories of Change

What Happened as These People Began to Know God?

John

John first came to church because he wanted to appease his wife, and he was ready to argue about nearly everything. As we studied together, he began to see God differently, dedicated his life to the Lord, and eventually became a leader in his local church.

Don

Don had returned to church, but his faith still felt empty and mechanical. As he began recognizing the ways God was speaking, his relationship with God affected the way he lived as a husband and father, and he later began teaching a Bible study group of his own.

Pablo

Pablo had spent much of his life moving between performance and guilt. When he began to understand that God’s love was not resting on how well he performed, he found a steadier sense of peace and hope.

If You Would Like Personal Help

Would You Like to Go Deeper in One Area?

For many people, the free seminar will give you what you need to begin. But if there is an area you would like to understand more deeply, I will also be offering a series of one-month trainings that take a closer look at each of the six areas we cover in the seminar.

Each training is designed to help you spend more time with one specific part of your walk with God, understand it more fully, and begin putting it into practice in your everyday life.

You do not need to decide anything about that now. Start with the seminar, and if one of these areas stands out to you and you would like to go deeper, you can learn more about the training for that topic afterward.
